Rita of Cascia was an Italian nun at the Augustinian monastery of Saint Mary Magdalene. The sacramental of blessed roses is associated with the devotion to Saint Rita. This devotion is inspired by the legend of the rosebush in her parents' garden, which the saint miraculously caused to bloom in winter while she was ill in the monastery. The rite, celebrated on May 22, consists of the priest blessing the roses presented by the devotees, who take the blessed flowers home as a sign of the saint's patronage.
